Based on the latest data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021 and recent World Health Organization (WHO) initiatives, skin diseases are a major global health priority, affecting over 3 billion people. In 2021, there were an estimated 4.69 billion incident cases of skin and subcutaneous diseases.

- Disease Prevalence: Skin diseases rank as the 4th leading cause of non-fatal disease burden, with fungal skin diseases (34.0%) and bacterial skin diseases (23.0%) contributing the highest burden.
- Rising Incidence: Viral skin diseases showed an upward trend in incidence up to 2021, with over 130 million prevalent cases.
- Global Health Action: The WHO is prioritizing skin-related Neglected Tropical Diseases (skin NTDs), which affect 1.8 billion people in resource-poor settings.
- Mortality: Skin diseases cause approximately 42 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Bacterial infections are a significant cause of death, having doubled in deaths between 1990 and 2019.
- Geographic Variations: The highest burden is observed in South Asia, while high-income North America recorded the highest rates of viral skin diseases in 2021.

- New Disease Discovered: Researchers identified a new type of erythroderma (red, peeling skin) in 2025 that does not respond to traditional treatments like steroids.

The World Health Assembly is considering a resolution for adoption in May 2025 to increase awareness and improve diagnosis and treatment for skin diseases worldwide.
