Latest Global Skin Trends & Data

Based on the latest data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021 and recent World Health Organization (WHO) initiatives, skin diseases are a major global health priority, affecting over 3 billion people. In 2021, there were an estimated 4.69 billion incident cases of skin and subcutaneous diseases.
Latest Global Skin Trends & Data (2025–2026):
  • Disease Prevalence: Skin diseases rank as the 4th leading cause of non-fatal disease burden, with fungal skin diseases (34.0%) and bacterial skin diseases (23.0%) contributing the highest burden.
  • Rising Incidence: Viral skin diseases showed an upward trend in incidence up to 2021, with over 130 million prevalent cases.
  • Global Health Action: The WHO is prioritizing skin-related Neglected Tropical Diseases (skin NTDs), which affect 1.8 billion people in resource-poor settings.
  • Mortality: Skin diseases cause approximately 42 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Bacterial infections are a significant cause of death, having doubled in deaths between 1990 and 2019.
  • Geographic Variations: The highest burden is observed in South Asia, while high-income North America recorded the highest rates of viral skin diseases in 2021.
Key 2025–2026 Research Breakthroughs:
  • New Disease Discovered: Researchers identified a new type of erythroderma (red, peeling skin) in 2025 that does not respond to traditional treatments like steroids.
  • Anti-Aging Research: Scientists have mapped the human skin cell by cell (Human Cell Atlas project), enabling research into reversing skin aging and reducing wrinkles.
  • Chronic Wound Healing: A new "smart bandage" (iCares) using AI and microfluidics has been developed to monitor wound healing in real-time, and a new oxygen-delivering gel has shown success in treating chronic diabetic wounds.
  • Innovative Acne Treatment: A new two-stage acne patch with tiny spikes (arrowhead-shaped) has shown promising results in clearing pimples within seven days.
  • Skincare Trend Validation: Rosemary has been found to have scientific backing for improving wound healing, with carnosic acid enabling regeneration.
Key Concerns:
  • Skin Cancer Trends: Skin cancer cases are rising, with invasive melanoma cases in the US expected to increase by 46.6% between 2016 and 2026.
  • TikTok Skincare Harm: Dermatology reports indicate that intense, multi-product skincare routines (6+ products) prompted by social media are harming the skin barriers of young teenagers.
  • Stigma and Mental Health: Skin diseases continue to cause significant stigma, discrimination, and mental health comorbidities, particularly depression and anxiety.
The World Health Assembly is considering a resolution for adoption in May 2025 to increase awareness and improve diagnosis and treatment for skin diseases worldwide.
